Keeping koi in a pond

Viewing koi in your garden pond, which is perfectly harmonized with the entire garden, will give you supreme delight. You can also enjoy the grandeur of each koi and a school of koi along with the scenery varying from season to season.
If you are planning to build a garden pond, you must not fail to equip your pond with a filtration system, generally called compulsory filtration machine. Many manufacturers produce various types of percolators. Biological water purification device, water circulation device and, in some cases, a heater are necessities.
Water of superior quality will enhance the beauty of your koi, and beautiful koi will make you feel content.

The depth of the pond is an important factor as well. Your pond must be at least 80 cm deep, and if possible, 150 to 200 cms deep. With these dimentions, you can keep large koi in your pond. A shallow area can become a feeding spot.
The shape of the pond is also important. A pond with less ruggedness is better. However, a slope on the floor is necessary so that discharge can be easily collected and drained out of the pond.
A pond of 15 meters long, 10 meters wide and 1 meter deep can hold 150 tons of water. In the pond of this size, you can keep quite a large number of koi of any size.

If you are thinking of a handy pond, 2 square meters and 1 meter deep, it will do.
In short, creating comfortable environment for koi and koi keepers is the most important aspect in creating a garden pond.
Lastly, don't forget to take a countermeasure against small animals such as cats and raccoons. It helps if the water surface is at least 20 cm below the margin of the pond.
